Berlin: Nightlife

First stop, a theatre performance and then on to a bar and later dancing until dawn

In Berlin, nights are not only for sleeping: dance to the early hours, sit as long as you like with your beer at the bar, visit concerts or theatre performances, go to the cinema – that gets locals and tourists in the right mood and ready to party the night away. Hardly anywhere else in the world is there a larger number of clubs, bars and cultural venues than in Berlin.

Almost 200 clubs, 30 cabarets and variety theatres, more than 130 cinemas and countless pubs and bars all compete with each other. The council offices in Mitte district are not very generous about granting licences in some streets so that the locals can have some peace at night.

Every year there are disputes between people living above a pub and its guests about the excessive noise that comes from nocturnal chatter outside in the open. So far, however, pub owners have usually managed to defend their interests. Even those who want to sleep will wake up sooner or later – and then (for some) it’s off for a quick beer round the corner to work up an appetite for the night to come!
