Our top insider tips for Mallorca:

Magic mountain

Depending on the time of year and the position of the sun, the Cavall Bernat mountain range in Cala Sant Vicenç appears in different colours. On February and March afternoons, the shadow on the mountain face takes on the shape of a rider on horseback: a popular inspiration for countless painters and photographers.

Beach Paradise

A 20 minute walk leads from the remote settlement of Cala s’Amunia to the hidden-away natural beach and deep-blue waters of Sa Comuna. There are no hotels, not even a beach shack, and usually not a soul about. A footpath connects these two natural bays 9 km south of Santanyí. These resorts arguably represent the last beach paradise on Mallorca’s eastern coast that is accessible by land. Access to Cala S’Amunia is by a set of steep steps down to the sea (in a bend in the village, to the left of a private house).

Palma Aquarium

See 8,000 ocean dwellers under one roof in the Palma Aquarium. It opened in 2007 and shelters 55 fish tanks with an impressive plant life and 8,000 specimens from the world’s oceans. The transparent tunnel lets you get really close to the fish and sharks. It also has a jungle landscape, a Mediterranean garden, a restaurant and a café. Platja de Palma | Motorway exit no. 10 | Balneario 14 | Daily 10am to 6pm (admission up to 5pm) | Adults 19.50 euros, children 15 euros

Tour of Palma

Discover the sights of Palma from the top of a bright red double-decker bus. The complete route takes 80 minutes and the 24-hour ticket allows you to hop on and off as you like at 16 stops. The earphones provided allow you to listen to the commentary in English. Every 20 minutes between 9.30am and 10pm (Nov to March 10am – 1pm), 20 euros per person.

Perfect for a Pub Crawl

The Carrer Fábrica lies off the beaten track in Palma. There aren't many tourists about but it is full of locals. There are countless pubs and restaurants, which make it a great place for an evening pub crawl – but not before 9pm, otherwise you’ll only have your own company! One of the best places to eat is Fábrica 23, which is very popular for its imaginative Mediterranean platters (there is no printed menu). Closed Sun–Mon | Tel. 9 71 45 31 25 | Budget

All day spa

Spend the whole day from 8am to 8pm in the high-class Oasis Spa area of the Son Caliú Hotel. This spa and wellness centre is fabulous! 20 euros gets non-residents a whole day of pampering.  Avinguda Son Caliu 8 | Tel. 9 71 68 22 00

Gourmet seafood dishes

Be spoilt for choice at the counters of the seafood restaurants in Ciutat Jardi. The location is beautiful as the restaurants are situated right by the beach, with fabulous views of Palma Bay. One of the best restaurants is Casda Fernando, which serves grilled fish and seafood straight from the sea. Closed Mondays | Tel. 9 71 26 54 17 | Expensive
