Our top insider tips for Corfu:

Delicious Greek food

The Bellissimo Taverna is hidden away just a few yards off the Old Town’s main shopping street. Sákis, the owner of this friendly taverna, serves the best Greek food and offers new delicacies everyday. The stuffed aubergines with a cheese topping are highly recommended. Open daily | Odós Agías Sofias 10 |Moderate

The island's most unusual church

The unique Evstrámenou Church can be found on the outskirts of Nímfes, just 6km from Roda. It looks like a Buddhist stupa and continues to baffle historians. The church rises up over a hexagonal base and is crowned by a hexagonal lantern of six windows. The church was probably erected in the 18th century but the white extension with the four-sided lantern and bell tower was not added until 1860. It is a magnificant place to see but can only be visited from the outside.

Relax in a lemon grove

The Lemon Garden in Acharávi is the place to sit and relax whilst you enjoy a drink and fine food. It is the most unusual restaurant in the north of the island where guests gather to dine under old lemon trees. Meat and fresh fish are grilled every day in the garden, which makes it feel like a private garden party. You certainly won't find many places as atmospheric and personal as here! Acharávi | On the main road, 50m to the west of the roundabout | Moderate

A paradise garden

Experience paradise with a stay at the Pension Skála in Paramónas! The modern guesthouse has one of the most beautiful gardens on the entire island as well a swimming pool. 10 rooms | Tel. 26 61 07 50 32 and 26 61 07 51 08 | Moderate

A stroll past temples ruins

A stroll under 150-year-old shady trees with a view of the Ionian Sea begins at the Corfu Stadium next to the airport (you can reach it on the number 2 bus). The route takes you to the main cemetery and church, Artemis temple, Ágii Theodóri convent, Mon Repos, Paléopolis Basilica, Doric temple and Hera temple. On this stroll you will remain within the boundary of the island’s capital but will experience its rural side far away from traffic. Not only does it offer beautiful natural scenery and historical treats, but also a lush green bay for swimming. The entire trek takes around 3 to 4 hours.

Hike across the island

With its many shady paths, green valleys and countless villages, Corfu is an ideal hiking region. You can hike across the island on the 200km (125 miles) long Corfu trail, which goes from Cape Akotíri Arkoúdia to Cape Akotíri Ágias Ekaterínis. The path is marked and you can never get completely lost because there is almost always a village in sight.

Magnificent view of the island

There is a wonderful view over the town and island all the way to the mountains in Albania from the roof garden of the Hotel Cavalieri. The hotel also serves excellent food and a diverse range of cocktails and drinks. Open Daily | No admittance in shorts | Lift available | Odós Kapodistríu 4 | Expensive
